Where the trail begins

Starting in Georgia, we will actually have to hike 8 miles on the Southern Terminus Access Trail – from Amicalola Falls to the trailhead of the Appalachian Trail which is located at Springer Mountain – one of the few areas of the state that was never forested.

There are now two metal markers that signify the official beginning of the AT – the wooden signs that used to stand here are now gone. From this point, there are 79 miles of trail in the state of Georgia, including the highest point on the trail, Blood Mountain (4,461 ft.)! This should take us about a week (as long as we don’t stop for too many naps, snacks, and birdwatching stake-outs)…
